ASSAULT SUSPECT ARRESTED AND CHARGED

(Attawapiskat First Nation) – Police arrested a female accused of assault with a weapon at an Attawapiskat First Nation home Sunday.

Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service received a call for service in the morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 8 regarding a person with a knife threatening people at a Spruce Street home.

When police arrived, they located a female suspect outside the home.

Following continued investigation, police learned the suspect had swung an edged weapon at an adult female victim and had to be held back by other bystanders to possibly prevent further attack.

Police learned of additional allegations regarding threats made by the accused to the victim, and a previous alleged assault that took place in the morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 7. During the alleged Feb. 7 incident, the same accused swung and nearly struck the same victim with a knife.

The accused was taken into custody without incident.

Shania KOOSTACHIN, 30, of Attawapiskat First Nation, is charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon x 2
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

She appeared in bail court on Monday, Feb. 9 and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
