STOLEN FIREARMS LOCATED, SEIZED

(Apitipi Anicinapek Nation, ON) – Police arrested a male suspect and seized five stolen firearms Saturday.

Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service learned on Saturday, Dec. 27 about an incident involving the theft of firearms within the community of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation.

An investigation revealed that between the dates of Oct. 1 and Dec. 27, a male suspect attended a residence and stole multiple firearms and ammunition from the victim’s gun safe. The victim and accused were known to one another.

As a result of continued investigation, the male suspect was located and arrested without incident on Saturday, Dec. 27. Police located and seized a pair of brass knuckles from the suspect.

Police obtained and executed a search warrant at a residential address within the community of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation on Sunday, Dec. 28. Following that search, police located and seized two rifles, two shotguns, two replica handguns, and ammunition.

The investigation that led to the arrest and firearm seizures was conducted by frontline NAPS members working out of the Apitipi Anicinapek Nation detachment, with assistance from the NAPS Crime Unit.

Bear Joseph White BABIN, 20, of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation, is charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000 x 5
  • Carry Concealed Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Possession of Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm x 5

The accused appeared for a bail hearing on Sunday, Dec. 28 and was remanded into custody with a future court appearance date.
