ACCUSED IN STABBING LOCATED, ARRESTED IN BEARSKIN LAKE

(Bearskin Lake, ON) – Police arrested a male following a stabbing incident in Bearskin Lake First Nation Friday.

Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service working out of the Bearskin Lake First Nation detachment received a call for service on Friday, Aug. 15, to attend the community nursing station about an injured male.

Police learned the injured male was an apparent victim of a recent assault and had sustained injuries consistent with a stabbing. The extent of the victim’s injuries is not known at this time but are not believed to be life-threatening.

Through continued investigation, police identified a male suspect.  He was eventually located in the community that same morning. The suspect appeared to be intoxicated and was in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck with its engine running.

Further investigation led police to locate and seize firearms in the home of the accused.

The accused was taken into custody without further incident.

Gabriel Stuart KAMENEWATAMIN, 32, of Bearskin Lake First Nation, is charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
  • Careless Use of a Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm x 4

The accused appeared for a bail hearing on Saturday, Aug. 16, and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
