Public Complaints and Oversight

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service is committed to providing the highest quality police service possible to our 34 communities.  Accountability remains an important element in maintaining this quality service. There are internal and external bodies that allow for oversight of NAPS members and the Service as a whole.

Internally, the Professional Standards Unit responds to and investigates all complaints in an unbiased and professional manner.  Externally, the two main bodies are the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) and The Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

All complaints about NAPS policies and service provided are investigated by the Inspector General of Policing.

Complaint

The Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA) now governs the operations of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) and complaints involving uniform NAPS officers and Special Constables. In alignment with the new legislation:

The NAPS Police Orders have been updated, specifically in the areas of:

  • Code of Conduct
  • Professionalism in Policing
  • Conflict of Interest

The Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) now holds oversight for all public complaints involving uniformed NAPS members and NAPS Special Constables.

Comment / Concern

Comments from the Public may be non-formal complaints or concerns that may be used to obtain explanations from NAPS in various less serious situations. NAPS shall ensure that reasonable efforts to address those general concerns and to report back to you what steps were taken. You can email, mail, fax, phone in or submit on-line your comment.
