Crime Units

The Crime Units of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service are divided into the three regions it serves – Northeast, Northwest, and Central. These crime units are responsible for reviewing and overseeing all benchmark occurrences within their respective regions. Benchmarks are classified as more serious, or major, crimes and include sexual assaults up to and including homicides.

Overall duties of crime are to assist frontline with active major cases, provide direction and support through investigative techniques such as:

  • Statement taking, suspect/accused interviews
  • Evidence gathering
  • Seeking Judicial Authorizations
  • Processing scenes
  • Maintaining Major Case Management and identifying trends within our area

The NAPS Crime Units are broken into three Regional Units:

  • Northwest Region Crime Unit
    They are responsible for 12 communities in their catchment area. 
  • Northeast Region Crime Unit
    They are responsible for 13 communities in their catchment area. 
  • Central Region Crime Unit
    They are responsible for 9 communities in their catchment area.

Dedicated Member specializing in
Missing Persons Cases

Within each Regional Crime Unit NAPS has a dedicated member who specializes in Missing Persons cases and are typically assigned to these cases within the Region the incident occurs.

Also, under the Crime Portfolio NAPS has a Survivor Assistance Support Program (SASP). SASP is an internal victim service within NAPS. At its current mandate the focus is on the immediate needs of a survivor pertaining to sexual assaults, child abuse, intimate partner violence (IPV), and to provide services to support the victim’s needs. Services include help navigating the court system, safety planning, resources and referrals. As we continue to grow as to will the services we are able to provide.
