Winter Road Enforcement 2009 Print

The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service is advising all the residents of the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation who will be using the winter roads and snowmobile trails that there will be police patrols on the winter roads and trails.

The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, supported by the Ontario Provincial Police, will be promoting safe use of the winter roads and trails. The police will be on the alert to intercept traffickers of illicit drugs and alcohol for illegal sale. Offences under the Criminal Code will be enforced such as impaired driving.

NAPS and its partners are again being diligent in their duties to become both proactive and reactive in its efforts to combat this type of threat to the communities. Possession of alcohol for illegal sale is against the law and is not a victimless crime. Alcohol and drugs contribute to increased police calls usually resulting in criminal charges.

The public should be aware that they could face the seizure of all goods and vehicles (cars, trucks, snow machines) used in committing the offence of supplying, selling, bartering or manufacturing intoxicants on a First Nation and, if convicted, they may also face the forfeiture of any goods and vehicles used in committing such an offence.

It is the intention of the police services to respect the traditional usage of roads and winter trails by not interfering with NAN citizens who are hunting and trapping on their traditional land.

The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service encourages any person to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 TIPS or the OPP communications center at 1-888-310-1122 with any information on drug traffickers, bootleggers or other criminal activity.

When you call Crime Stoppers, you do not have to reveal your identity and you may receive a cash reward.
