UPDATE: FATAL HOUSE FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN NIBINAMIK FIRST NATION Print

(Summer Beaver, ON) On January 13, 2011, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service began an investigation into a residential fire in the First Nation community of Nibinamik that claimed the lives of two young children and injured a third child.

A post-mortem examination of the 2 and 3 year old boys revealed that they died from smoke inhalation.  The third child, a girl aged 6 months old, continues to make progress.  She is in the Paediatric Unit at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario.  The infant girl is reported to be doing well.  She is eating, smiling, and interacting with everyone.

The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental and no foul play is suspected.

Nibinamik First Nation is approximately 500 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
