(Fort Albany, ON)  On October 28, 2010, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, Fort Albany Detachment, received a report of missing persons and an abandoned boat on the Fort Albany River.

Through a coordinated effort between officers from both the Kashechewan and Fort Albany Detachments and a local Fort Albany member, police immediately organized a marine search of the river near the area where the abandoned boat and winter gear had been located.  The weather conditions at the time included gusting winds of between 50 and 80 km per hour, blowing snow, and darkness.

The two missing men were located at 12:00 a.m. several metres inland from the river.  The men had built a survival shelter and fire, the light of the fire was visible to the search party.  Police brought the two men back to a waiting police vehicle where they were warmed up and brought back to Fort Albany.  No further injuries were reported.

Fort Albany First Nation is located approximately 400 kilometres north of Cochrane.
