Peawanuck First Nation: Missing Person Print

On June 18, 2009 at approximately 11:30 PM. a boat carrying an off duty officer from the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and a community member from the Peawanuck First Nation capsized on the Winisk River.

The community member made it safely to shore however Sr. Cst Wilfred Chum has not yet been located.

The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, Canadian Rangers, OPP and community members have been conducting land, water and aerial searches for Sr. Cst. Chum with negative results.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit dive team will be concluding their search today and the OPP Emergency Response team will also conclude their ground search.

This matter is under investigation by both the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.

Peawanuck community members and volunteers from the surrounding communities will continue the search.

Peawanuck First Nation is approximately 720 km north of Cochrane, Ontario and is located near Hudson Bay.

BIO of Senior Constable Wilfred Chum

Senior Constable Wilfred Chum began his police career at Moose Factory with the First Nations Policing Program in 1978.

In 1980 Wilfred joined the Ontario Provincial Police and was stationed with the Northeast Patrol in South Porcupine. With the patrol unit he served the Cree communities of the James and Hudson's Bay Coast. He continued in subsequent OPP postings in Moosonee, Cochrane and Armstrong.

Sr. Constable Chum was seconded for a period of 2 years to Northern College in Moosonee as an instructor with the Special Constable Program.

He served with the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office for 6 years as a fire investigator in Sudbury and Thunder Bay.

He returned to policing with the Anishnabek Police Service and was working as a relief officer with NAPS Northeast Region.

Sr. Cst. Wilfred Chum was awarded the Governor General of Canada Exemplary Service Medal for his dedicated years of service to the First Nations People on June 9 2009.

Sr. Cst. Wilfred Chum was set to retire after 30 years of policing this summer.
