Sr. Constable Wilfred Chum Print

One of NAPS longest serving members was in an off duty boating accident late last night, June 18, 2009 at approximately 11:30 PM. This took place on the Winisk River in the First Nations Community of Peawanuck. The boat of Sr. Constable Wilfred Chum capsized with himself, and another community member in the boat. The community member swam to shore. The whereabouts of Wilfred has not yet been determined.

The search is ongoing by the NAPS-Northeast Crime Unit, and the Canadian Rangers with the assistance of the OPP ERT team and Search Master. There is currently a Hercules military plane being used for purposes of a search and rescue. The Rangers are assisting by land and water along the Winisk River.

Additional search resources are being evaluated hourly and NAPS members including the Chief of Police have been working in the community since early this morning. Our hopes and prayers go to Wilfred and his family.

We are hoping for his safe return and will update the membership of NAPS once more information is available.
