POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH IN KASABONIKA LAKE FIRST NATION 2013-11-19 PDF Print E-mail

(KASABONIKA LAKE, ON) – On November 17, 2013 at approximately 10:00pm (CST) the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to a reported altercation at a residence situated on Kasabonika Lake First Nation Territory. Upon arrival of police it was determined that a female had been transported to medical treatment and subsequently succumbed to her injuries.

At the request of the NAPS, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Peter Loree of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch was called in to assist in this death investigation.

Twenty-one-year old Clarissa ANDERSON, a female from Kasabonika Lake First Nation has been charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code. The accused is being held in police custody and is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on November 22, 2013.

The victim has been identified as twenty-year old Courtney MAMAKEESIC from Kasabonika Lake First Nation.  A post mortem examination took place in Kenora on November 19, 2013. The cause of death is not being released.
